The Girls Go Fishing on the Kenai River Alaska

Plop! Plop! Plop! The weight on my fishing line and others around hit the water, sink to the bottom and bounce with the flow of the river until with a sudden jerk it is pulled back then out of the water and it starts again. This is how I spent my second day in Alaska.

I have never had a desire to fish before but when I was planning my trip to Alaska I had the strongest desire to go fly fishing. I did a little research and sent out email inquires to see if anyone would take a couple of women that would need a lesson. As the emails came back I was impressed by the information that was sent back to me by Kenai Cache Outfitters. It wasn’t call me and we will talk, it was valuable information that helped me make a decision.

Bald Eagles on the KenaiThe color of the Kenai River is amazing! It is a glacier fed river and the most brilliant blue. It reminded me alot of the water in the Caribbean. Pictures just don't do it justice.

Kenai Cache OutfittersGary is in the tan and he was our guide for the day.

Kenai on parade There is a ferry where we launched the boat that takes the anglers across the river. As we were floating by Jamie said she felt like she was in a parade and maybe we should wave to everyone.

Cheryl Fishing KenaiThis is me. Don't I look like a natural?

Jamie Fishing KenaiJamie saw this picture of herself and said that she was a ribbon dancer.

Jamie fish onThe fish were really slippery this day because a lot of fish never made it to the shore. Thought it might be the inexperienced anglers but it was happening to the locals as well, just as the net was ready to bring the fish they would slip off of the hook. That was the story of the day for Jamie, she had six just to the net and then they were gone. She didn't go home empty handed though, she caught a rock. When she brought her line in there was a rock on the hook.

Cheryl on the KenaiLook how beautiful Alaska is!

Cheryl Reeling InThese boots aren't made for hiking

Cheryl Fish OnGary is just waiting with the net

Fish In NetA fish! A fish! I actually caught a fish!

Cheryl Sockeye Fishing KenaiI can't believe I am holding a fish.

Sockeye Salmon - estimated 8 to 10 lbs.

Thanks Kenai Cache Outfitters and Gary for a great day. Thanks Jamie for hanging out with your Mom and taking some great pictures. I think we will have to do this again!

My cousins wife Merry got a Big Horn Tag for Nevada, here is the email that was sent.

As you all know, Merry got a Nelson Bighorn Sheep tag for the McCullough Range in Southern Nevada. We were checking things out this last weekend and saw some of the wildlife that lives in the area. It was fun!

Thursday

We took a quick trip over Memorial Day to look for Desert Bighorn Sheep and enjoy the great outdoors. We are lucky to live close to nature and all the beauties that abound. A small campfire roasting hotdogs on a stick, smores and hot chocolate in the cool of the morning brought back memories of childhood camping. Riding ATVs across the red sand brought back other memories of a trip to the Kalahari Desert in Namibia. As we enjoyed our freedom we spent the day exploring and creating new memories.IMG_1068_edited_smIMG_1129_edited_smIMG_1145_edited_smIMG_1158_edited_smIMG_1159_edited_smIMG_1166_edited_smIMG_1167_edited_smIMG_1221_edited_sm

I have been hunting for Mountain Lion the past two week ends in Southern Utah with Jake Bess who is the owner of Timber Mountain Outfitters.
This is my first time hunting lions with dogs and I am having a great time. I will be trying to take it with my bow.
I will be posting about my hunt as soon as we get our Tom.

Greater Kudu Bulls of Africa

IMG_0364

Kudu 06

IMG_0328a

Kudu 03

I have been to Africa three different times hunting Kudu in Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. I think the Greater Kudu is by far the most majestic of all the antelope type mammals. Many hunters who have also hunted them considered to be the most handsome of the tragelaphine antelopes which includes the Bongo, Eland, Nyala, Bushbuck and Sitatunga. Older bulls can be up to 5.5 ft and weigh 800 lbs. Their short smooth coats vary in color from tan to grey. Males become grayer with age and their necks darker in the breeding season. Both Male and Females have white markings, including 6-10 vertical stripes along the sides, a chevron between the eyes, and cheek spots. All of them have a short upright mane, form top of the head to the houlders, extending underneath along the throat. The black tipped bushy tail is white underneath. When running away from danger the tail is curled up over the back so that the white underside serves as a visual alarm signal for the rest of the heard to follow in dense bushes. The bulls have long spiral horns that are spectacular. I remember on my first trip to Namibia I took a very nice bull with 38" horns. Two years later I took a better bull with 54" horns and more mass. I never got the 38" bull mounted. If you are going to hunt Kudu I would suggest trying to take a bull with 50" or better horns. If you would like to talk to me about hunting in Africa go to my website Hunting Consultants.
